Apoptosis: Apoptosis is a self-killing mechanism of genetically-programmed cell death that is involved in normal development and homeostasis in the animal kingdom. The deregulation of apoptosis plays a major role in variety of pathologies, including cancer, autoimmunity, immunodeficiency and neurodegenerative disease (1-4). The apoptotic program of cell death is orchestrated by cysteine-dependent aspartate-directed proteases (caspases) through cleavage of variety proteins causing cell shrinkage, nuclear fragmentation, chromatin condensation and membrane blebbing, and leading to phagocytic recognition and engulfment of the dying cells (5).
